Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the oldest of the three daughters of Lithuanian Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. After her father died in the role of a carnival barker as an infant and she was forced to keep the family going by working as a cook and server. Ruth went to school and grew up in poverty within Boston Massachusetts in the tenement district. Following only two school years the young woman left to pursue the acting career. There were many hurdles to overcome on her chosen career path. When she was in New York she was hired to take photos for a magazine about crime and drama, however no theater jobs were forthcoming. When she was employed as a hat-check girl at a nightclub she quit her job and moved back to Boston. She was an usherette during the day and then was a part of the New England Repertory Company by evening, her first acting position that was permanent. She graduated with a certificate in drama at Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
